LOMACHENKO STOPS MARRIAGA IN SEVEN, BELTRAN EDGES VASQUEZ

Photo: German Villasenor

By Francisco Villasenor

Los Angeles, CA (August 5th, 2017) -Wunderkind Vasyl Lomachenko put up a stellar performance on Saturday night to retain his WBO Superfeatherweight belt with a stoppage over uber-tough Miguel Marriaga on the Top Rank promoted / ESPN / ESPN Deportes televised main event at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles, California.

Marriaga, tough chinned and usually will-iron Colombian fighter, might have won the first round coming forward aggressively, landing some hard shots at Lomachenko, who mainly too the round to figure his opponent out.

It would be, for all intents and purposes over, as the champion went on to befuddle, out-think and out land the challenger at every turn.

By the fifth round, Marriaga, who had been down via a third round left hook upstairs,

A clash of heads cut Lomachenko on the edge of his left eye, after the latter landed a jarring uppercut, which bounced Marriaga's head violently, cutting the champion.

Marriaga, would taste the canvas once more at the end of the seventh, after being reduced to a punching bag, prompting the challenger's corner to call off the fight.

With the win, Lomachenko moved to 9-1-0 with 7KO's, while Marriaga fell to 25-3-0, with 21KO's.

On the co-featured bout, number one ranked Lightweight Raymundo Beltran had all he could handle, managing to edge the wily, shifty and very dangerous former WBA Super featherweight champion, Costa Rican Bryan Vasquez in a ten round bout.

Beltran would win via hard-earned 95-95 and 96-94 twice.
